Recording video calls

Learn how to securely record video calls

Updated this week

The Konfidens video system supports local recording of video calls. Recordings are stored locally on your device or external hard drive, not in Konfidens.

This feature is only available for therapists using Edge, Chrome or Chromium-based browsers on a laptop. Clients are never allowed to record sessions.

Start a recording

  1. Start a video call

  2. Click the Record button in the bottom menu bar

  3. A consent reminder is shown. Confirm consent and click Start recording.

Stop a recording

  • Click the Record button again to stop.

When stopped, the recording is saved locally on your computer in your browser’s default Downloads folder.

Action required: Move the file to a secure storage location as soon as possible.

Data protection and compliance

Konfidens video recording is designed with privacy as a first principle.

  • Local-first recording: Recordings are created and stored locally in the browser and then saved to your computer. The file remains on your device at all times.

  • No central storage: Recordings are not uploaded, shared, or processed by Konfidens or any web server. This ensures full control over the file and minimizes exposure risk.

  • Peer-to-peer video calls: Video calls in Konfidens are peer to peer. Audio and video streams are exchanged directly between participants, supporting strong privacy and reducing reliance on intermediary infrastructure.

Because Konfidens does not access or store recordings, practitioners retain full ownership and responsibility for consent, secure storage, access control, retention, and deletion in line with applicable legislation and professional obligations.

File format: WebM

  • Recordings are saved as WebM files.

  • WebM files can be played locally in most modern web browsers or in desktop media players such as VLC.

  • Playback in a browser uses the browser as a local video player; the file is not uploaded to the internet.

Converting recordings

  • If you need a different format, use a trusted local conversion tool such as HandBrake.

  • Do not use online video players or conversion services for recordings containing sensitive content.
